HISTORY
The International Gallery of Contemporary Art began in the early 1980s as a small room next to the art studio of Anchorage sculptor David Felker. The gallery took its name from its location on International Airport Road, but the name has also come to represent the Gallery’s ability to draw artists from all around the world for exhibitions. From its beginning, the Gallery has been available for artists to exhibit experimental works of art, including installation and performance art. This was revolutionary for Anchorage at the time. In 1989, the Gallery became incorporated and established its non-profit status. A board of directors was also established. Despite the growth of the Gallery over the years, the vision has remained the same: an unwavering dedication to presenting the finest contemporary art available and providing artists with a venue to explore new aspects of their work without concern for commercial viability. The International Gallery hosts monthly exhibitions by local artists as well as artists from outside the state and across the globe.
